The Wireless Broadband Alliance and other industry groups, like IETF, are powered by the energy of their volunteers. We’ve been working with WBA for about a year now and were honored when our CEO Alan DeKok was recognized for his involvement with this global industry coalition.
Alan received a Key Contributor award from WBA for his input and participation in the group’s activities.
The annual recognition awards acknowledge participants’ significant efforts on behalf of the organization and their ability to motivate peers.
Applying his extensive experience with RADIUS and other AAA frameworks, Alan has been contributing to standards under development by the RADIUS Accounting Assurance work group.
Finding and fixing errors builds trust in the system
Alan says: “I joined WBA to be part of the solution. The interconnected wireless systems that allow people to be online anywhere, anytime need a reliable, accurate protocol to track usage and accounting. We’re making sure customers get billed accurately and building greater trust in the global wireless system.”
RADIUS session statistics are used by all parties as an authoritative record of usage, particularly in Wi-Fi roaming scenarios. The work group is focused on solving longstanding challenges that some telcos and ISPs have when using RADIUS as the record of usage. WBA is codifying issues with RADIUS accounting and developing a conformance test suite to determine what people within the RADIUS ecosystem do wrong and how they should fix it. This is critical to establishing industry guidelines for Wi-Fi roaming stakeholders.
WBA aims to facilitate seamless, interoperable Wi-Fi for a global wireless ecosystem by addressing business and technical issues to enable collaboration among service providers, technology companies, cities, venue partners and organizations. Its member-led Work Groups are dedicated to resolving standards and technical issues to promote end-to-end services and accelerate business opportunities.
